A fatal crash on Appian Way in El Sobrante last week remains under investigation.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded at about 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, to a solo vehicle crash on eastbound Appian Way just west of La Paloma Road.
A white Chevrolet Astro van was being driven recklessly, passing other motorists at a high rate of speed, when the vehicle sideswiped three parked cars and crashed into a parked trailer, according to the CHP. The Chevrolet then overturned onto its left side before coming to a rest.
A man in the passenger seat who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital with suspected minor injuries, the CHP said.
The driver was placed in custody for DUI related charges, although the crash remains under investigation.
Any witnesses to the event or the events leading up to it are asked to contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or email your contact information to 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer.
