The Hercules community is celebrating a multi-generational legacy of service as two local brothers follow their father’s path into law enforcement.

Lumus Russell III, who moved to the city as a child in 1977 and later served with the Hercules Police Department, recently saw both of his sons graduate from police academies to serve the Bay Area.

Last week, Lumus Russell IV graduated from the San Francisco Police Academy. His brother, Miles Russell, previously graduated from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Academy in December 2025 and currently serves as a deputy for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department.

The new recruits come at a time when national studies show a low percentage of law enforcement officers would recommend the career to their own children.

“His example didn’t discourage—it inspired,” Hercules police said.

The family now represents two generations of officers dedicated to public safety across the region.

“From a father who led by example to sons who answered the call, the Russell family reminds us what commitment, courage, and community truly look like,” Hercules police said. “We are proud to honor their story—and grateful for the generations who continue to serve.”
