The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) celebrated the final shift of Fire Chief Lewis Broschard on Thursday, marking the end of a 30-year career in public safety, including 18 years with the district.
Under Chief Broschard, the district expanded by merging with several local fire agencies and modernizing its wildfire response with a new hand crew and helicopter program. These improvements raised the official safety rating for the area, potentially lowering insurance costs for residents. Broschard also oversaw the rebuilding of fire stations, the purchase of new engines, and the expansion of ambulance and dispatch services.
The chief was also heralded for prioritizing staff well-being through new health programs and helping neighborhoods establish over 40 fire safety groups to reduce wildfire risks.
“Thank you, Chief, for your leadership, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the safety of our communities and the strength of our department,” the department stated Thursday. “Your impact will be felt for years to come.”
