BART is inviting local musicians to perform live music in stations from March 21 through March 31 as part of Bach in the Subways, a global celebration of composer Johann Sebastian Bach that began in 2010.
Since its start in New York City, the initiative has spread to over 150 cities in 40 countries. All performances will take place in the non-paid areas of stations to remain accessible to the public.
Musicians can register (register here!) as solo artists or in groups to participate. While playing Bach is recommended, it is not a requirement. Interested artists must register through the event website and apply for a free Expressive Activity Permit from BART. All performers must follow specific guidelines, which include using only acoustic instruments and avoiding the use of signs on station walls.
Because the event is intended as a musical gift to the community, musicians are not allowed to solicit tips or accept money. This rule ensures the focus remains on sharing music in public spaces. Read more about requirements and guidelines here.
BART will provide a specific performance schedule later in March as the event dates approach.
