A quick-thinking homeowner and home security technology helped El Cerrito Police arrest a burglary suspect on Feb. 9.

Officers took 41-year-old Jason Lee Harris into custody after he was spotted trespassing on a property in the 1700 block of Liberty Street.

The incident began at 4:25 p.m. when a resident was alerted to activity by a home alarm. After checking security camera footage and seeing an unknown man in the yard, the resident called the police with a detailed description. Officers arrived to find the suspect sitting on the home’s back porch.

Upon making contact, officers identified the man as the same person responsible for a previous residential burglary that took place on Jan. 25. Harris, a transient with ties to the area, was found in possession of burglary tools.

Police booked Harris at the El Cerrito Police Department for trespassing, possession of burglary tools, and the earlier January burglary. He was later moved to the Martinez Detention Facility.
