El Cerrito police are searching for a man suspected of breaking into a home in the 1700 block of Lexington Avenue early Sunday.
The resident used text-to-911 to report the break-in around 2:30 a.m. after hearing noises and seeing a flashlight through a bedroom door. The suspect briefly opened the door but fled after seeing the resident holding a phone, police said.
Police say the man got inside by prying open a window and unlocking a door. He stole one item of clothing before leaving the area. Officers searched the neighborhood but were unable to find him.
He is described as a Black man, 35 to 45 years old, wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants, and white shoes with red stripes. He was carrying a tan backpack.
Investigators are asking neighbors to check their security cameras for any footage of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at (510) 215-4435 or email investigations@el-cerrito.org.
