The San Pablo City Council approved funding requests for three urgent infrastructure projects Monday that includes $2.27 million to fully replace the synthetic turf field at Rumrill Sports Park.
Despite routine maintenance, heavy use has worn the main turf beyond its effective lifespan, raising concerns over safety, liability, and playability, according to the city.
The 4.5-acre facility, which opened in September 2017 after being transformed from a former railroad yard and brownfield site, hosts youth and community sports, including events involving the San Pablo United Youth Soccer Club. It offers three synthetic‑turf soccer fields, lighting, a playground, picnic area, restroom/concession building and parking.
The turf replacement will be funded through the Building, Facilities & Parks Maintenance Reserves (Fund 130), which provides financial resources for critical infrastructure improvements to city buildings, facilities, and parks. Also approved to receive these funds is the San Pablo Senior Center HVAC Replacement project, at an estimated cost of $382,990. This project will help make the senior center qualify as a designated “Cooling Center” during extreme heat events, the city said. Finally, an emergency power generator that meets recent Bay Area Air Quality Management District standards will be procured and installed at San Pablo Police Department headquarters at a cost of $728,632.
