BART is reporting a 50 percent decrease in overall crime in the first three months of 2025 when compared to the same period last year, including a 23 percent decrease in violent crime, according to the transit agency.
From January through March this year, nearly 400 fewer criminal incidents were reported on the system from the same period in 2024, while property crimes were down 53 percent. Auto burglaries fell by 61 percent and auto thefts by 58 percent.
BART PD said its response time averaging under five minutes is among the fastest in the Bay Area.
The crime reduction follows a 17-year decline in overall crime on BART last year when compared to 2023.
BART credits its implementation of a “Safe and Clean Plan” for the crime reduction. The plan includes boosting visible train patrols, installing new fare gates and improving station lighting.
“This steep decline in our crime rate would not be possible without the hard work of the people of the BART Police Department,” said BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin. “We will continue to deploy sworn officers as well as non-sworn unarmed Crisis Intervention Specialists, Transit Ambassadors, Fare Inspectors, and Community Service Officers to maximize our presence in the system and ensure BART is welcoming for all.”
