A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run vehicle collision on Carlson Boulevard in Richmond early Saturday, according to Richmond Firefighters Local 188.

Crews responded around 2 a.m. to Carlson between Bayview and Hartnett avenues and found a vehicle crashed into barrier fencing and thick shrubs off the roadway. The driver and any other occupants of the vehicle fled prior to the arrival of first responders.

A pedestrian was found trapped under the vehicle and pinned along with a large amount of fencing material. The victim, who was removed from beneath the vehicle after about 25 minutes of coordinated teamwork, was pronounced deceased at the scene, officials said.

A steel fence post lodged into the driver-side window during the collision, but it doesn’t appear that it struck occupants inside.

The incident could have been even worse given that the vehicle narrowly missed striking an occupied homeless encampment, fire officials said.

“RPD is actively investigating the cause of the incident and working to identify the driver and any possible occupants who were in the vehicle at the time of the accident,” they added.

The identity of the pedestrian was not immediately available.
