A new ordinance approved by the Pinole City Council introduces regulations on the safe storage of firearms in the city.
Effective today, Chapter 9.19 “Storage of Firearms” of the Municipal Code looks to reduce the risks related to unsecured firearms, such as accidental injuries, theft and intentional harm.
Under the ordinance, firearms should be stored in a locked container or secured with a trigger lock in residences, while ammunition also should be locked up in a separate container. Failure to follow the residential storage requirements can lead to a fine of up to $1,000 per violation.
In Pinole, firearms left in vehicles should be disabled with a trigger lock in a locked container, while inside a locked truck or vehicle. Violations of the firearm storage ordinance in vehicles will result in the first occurrence being treated as an infraction and further violations being punishable by fines up to $1,000.
By design, Pinole’s ordinance looks to promote public safety by making firearms inaccessible to unauthorized individuals, reducing the risk of accidental shootings, suicides and crimes involving stolen firearms, according to the city.
“The adoption of this ordinance is an important step in safeguarding our community,” said Mayor of Pinole Maureen Toms. “By securing firearms, we are preventing unnecessary harm and promoting responsible gun ownership in Pinole.”
