A San Pablo officer and a team of his colleagues received a Chief’s Citation for their actions in responding to a volatile situation last month involving an armed young person suffering from a mental health crisis.

Officer Jose Soriano and the SPPD D&E Patrol Teams responded on Aug. 8 to a report of the young female attempting to enter a family residence while acting aggressively and while armed with a knife, police said.

The young lady threatened officers with violence, but the officers “remained calm and established a safe perimeter around the female while Officer Soriano began engaging in de-escalation tactics,” police said.

After about 50 minutes, Officer Soriano convinced her to discard the knife and surrender. She was then taken to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment.

“Officer Soriano and his teammates should be commended for their commitment to de-escalate protect this young lady in the face of danger and violence,” police said.
