Richmond Ceasefire to hold annual citywide walk

Potentially hundreds of residents are set to walk in the name of peace across the city of Richmond for a Ceasefire event on Friday, July 21.

While the group Richmond Ceasefire has led walks in city neighborhoods affected by violence every Friday night since 2011, the group holds a larger citywide event annually.

Community members are encouraged to meet for the walk’s start at 5 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 321 Alamo Ave. The walk will include a number of stops along the way, including at Pogo Park at 720 Elm St., at St. Mark’s Catholic Church at 159 Harbor Way and at Providence Missionary Baptist Church at 314 S. 12th St. The walk ends at Miracle Temple at 2425 Cutting Blvd.

Richmond Ceasefire was credited as part of a larger, community-driven violence prevention effort that vastly reduced the crime rate from 2009 to 2011.

“The Citywide Walk is a longer annual walk about reclaiming the neighborhoods across lines that our young people are afraid to cross [from north to south],” organizers said.

Walkers will be accompanied by a band from the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts.
