El Cerrito wants to upgrade the nine-camera surveillance system pointed at the Ohlone Greenway and add 10 cameras to several new areas.
The existing nine cameras, installed in 2011 from Blake Street to Conlon Avenue, which passes by BART’s El Cerrito del Norte Station, have been successful at deterring crime and apprehending suspects who commit crimes on the Greenway or use the trail as an escape route, the city said.
The additional 10 cameras will be placed north of Conlon Avenue along the Greenway to San Pablo Avenue, at San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Boulevard, and also along the Greenway at Fairmount Avenue.
The new camera system will be developed in coordination with other law enforcement agencies as a way to collaborate on solving crimes such as freeway shootings, the city said.
A timeline for the installation wasn’t immediately available.
