Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) has a few big announcements to make: First, that it will be offering free adoptions of all animals from Friday, June 29, through Tuesday, July 3, and that it has partnered with Finding Rover, a facial recognition platform, to reunite lost pets over the July 4 holiday.

The free adoptions are aimed at clearing kennel space at county shelters in advance of a busy 4th of July holiday, when pets often go missing, often due to fear experienced from the sound of fireworks.

“The free adoption special includes most fees associated with adopting an animal, including: adoption fees, spay/neuter, micro-chipping and vaccination,” CCAS said. “However, new adopters will be required to license their animal.”

CCAS expressed the importance of ensuring pets are licensed, collared and microchipped to greatly increase the chance they can reunite with their families when they are lost.

The new partnership CCAS has reached with Finding Rover may help. The free service uses facial recognition to help reunite lost dogs and cats with their families.

“As a result of this partnership, pet owners in Contra Costa County can now see if their lost pet is in our care with just a few clicks,” according to CCAS. “Every dog and cat that enters a CCAS shelter becomes registered on Finding Rover. Users of Finding Rover can search the shelter and surrounding areas right from their smartphone or computer in efforts to find their missing pet, a neighbor’s missing pet, the family of a found pet or search for adoptable pets.”

All pets that leave CCAS through a reunion or adoption will remain on Finding Rover, along with information provided by the pet’s owners, so that they will remain in the system in the event they are lost in the future.

Registration of your pet is free and easy by going to www.FindingRover.com and uploading your pet’s photo, entering a few details about your pet, your name, email and zip code.

CCAS adoption locations include the Martinez Adoption Center at 4800 Imhoff Pl. in Martinez, and the Pinole Adoption Center at 910 San Pablo Ave.
