An unseeded El Cerrito High sophomore won the North Coast Section singles tennis championship on Saturday, defeating three seeded opponents on the way, including the tournament’s defending champion.

Karl Collins triumphed at the NCS finale at Diamond Hills Sports Club in Oakley. The boys NCS tennis title is a first for El Cerrito High.

On Friday, Collins defeated No. 4-seeded Theo Dean, 6-1, 7-5. The following day, he defeated last year’s NCS champ, Kobe Tran, who is bound for Brigham Young University. Collins fought past Tran to win 6-2, 2-6 and 7-5. He won a hard fought thriller of a third set that featured excellent shot variety and stamina by both players.

In the championship match, Collins topped Marin County Athletic League champ Luke Neal from Redwood High, 6-3, 6-1.

Asked about his performance Collins said the tourney was “a big win. I beat three tough opponents. I put in some hard work.”
