National Night Out aims to build safety via block parties

Dozens of Richmond police officers and firefighters mingled with community leaders and residents in the Target parking lot on Tuesday night before setting off on caravans throughout the city — all part of a nationally celebrated event that aims to build safer communities.

The annual National Night Out celebration, held on the first Tuesday in August, aims to build bonds between neighbors, police officers and firefighters in order to increase crime prevention and safety awareness. It does so through the organization of block parties throughout the community.

After meeting at the Target parking lot for a kick-off party about 5 p.m. — which included children’s activities, resource booths and delicious grub from CJ’s Barbecue & Fish — three caravans containing police, fire officials and community officials and leaders set off to visit more than 20 neighborhood block parties and to mingle with neighbors.

All residents, including those unable to participate, were asked to turn their porch lights on Tuesday night to show support for the event, which is celebrated by more than 35 million people in over 15,000 communities across the nation.

After visiting more than 20 neighborhoods around the city, the caravans were then set to complete their tours at an End Party being held at 700 Barrett Ave. at 8 p.m.
