A community chess tournament set for Hilltop Mall on Oct. 8 will raise funds for the “Chess in Richmond’s Schools Program.”
The Speed Chess Tournament is set to take place inside the mall near JC Penney at 2200 Hilltop Mall Road and starts at 11 a.m. The 4th annual tournament, held by the West Coast Chess Alliance in partnership with the mall, is occurring in conjunction with National Chess Day.
Registration for the speed tournament begins at 11 a.m., with the first of five rounds starting at 1 p.m. Games are completed in five minutes. There will be cash prizes for the top three winners.
Proceeds from the tournament will help fund an ongoing effort to provide free chess sets and instructional material to local schools.
It is “part of our mission to support scholastic chess in local schools,” said TC Ball, who heads the West Coast Chess Alliance.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford and Congress established “National Chess Day” in an effort to encourage students and adults to engage in a game known to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The WCCA is a nonprofit sponsored by the Ed-Fund and an official affiliate of the United States Chess Federation.
