Hula Hoop Dance fundraiser coming to Nichol Park

Emiah Hawkins is dancing all over Richmond to realize her dream of opening a free local dance studio for local children.

The 25-year-old Richmond native who trains in Congolese dance at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts in Oakland performed at National Night Out festivities Tuesday. And next week, she’s inviting the community to Nichol Park for a fun event.

As a fundraiser for the local dance studio, Hawkins is holding a Hula Hoop Dance in the Park event on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 1 p.m. to 2:10 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own hula hoops. All donations go toward the dance studio effort, Hawkins said.

Hawkins has launched a GoFundMe! account with a current goal of $20,000 toward the studio.

While putting this together, Hawkins is also attending Cal State-Sacramento, where she is majoring in child development and minoring in counseling and dance.

“My goal is to create a space for children to go to regularly that will help them deal with stress, problems, or anything else going on in their life,” Hawkins said. “I would do this by opening up a space in the Richmond area for children to take free dance classesdance.8-4
