Reps from eight tribes to join Salesian's Native American heritage event

Representatives from eight tribes will participate in Native American Heritage Day at Salesian College Preparatory on Friday.

“It’s important that we keep the Native American spirit alive and thriving,” Salesian senior and event organizer Ellissa Thompson, an enrolled member in the Chickasaw Nation, said in a school statement.

The Richmond school is planning activities starting at 12:15 p.m., including a school-wide assembly that will feature storytelling by tribal members, such as Jessie Riddle of the Apache/Pit River tribe. Michael Bellanger (Sac and Fox/Kickapoo) will perform drumming and Lakota Holder (Navajo/ Lakota/Tlinglit) will perform Lakota Shawl Dancing during the assembly. A special guest from Oklahoma’s Chickasaw Nation is also planning to attend.

Traditional Native American food will be served, including frybread taco lunch and samples of a traditional Chickasaw dish of “pashofa” (cooked cracked corn), the school’s statement said.

Celebrating Native American heritage not only helps preserve culture but helps teach “the richness and vitality of the Native American way of life,” Thompson said.
