Deadly crash following police pursuit in Richmond

A driver who had been fleeing Richmond police on Saturday night crashed into another vehicle at 24th Street and Gaynor Avenue, killing a passenger in the second car and critically injuring two others, according to Bay City News.

The incident unfolded about 9:30 p.m. when police spotted a black Corvette driving recklessly in a residential neighborhood and attempted to pull it over. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a man in his 20s, failed to yield to police and a pursuit ensued for a few minutes. Police lost sight of the vehicle after it turned north on 23rd Street, police said.

policepursuit.4-12Moments later, additional officers responding to the pursuit located the Corvette at 24th and Gaynor, where it had crashed into another vehicle, which KRON4 news identified as a Honda. A passenger in that Honda was killed and the Honda’s driver was critically injured.

The driver of the Corvette fled the scene on foot but was apprehended, police said.

Another person was found critically injured in the area, but it was not immediately clear whether that person was in the suspect vehicle or was a pedestrian, police said.

The incident is under investigation by the RPD’s homicide unit, California Highway Patrol and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
