A coalition of Contra Costa County stakeholders promoting healthy and active lifestyles for children has released a cool parent-rated map of the Iron Triangle’s best parks for kids ages 0-5.
The map also advises parents that children should get at least an hour of active play everyday, and that outdoor play burns off the most calories and helps build motor skills like running and jumping. Along with the usual recommendation of wearing sunscreen, the map points out that you should have fun at the park, too.
“Bring a ball. Chase some bubbles. Have a race. Don’t just sit there, have fun!” it states.

The fun map idea came from Healthy & Active Before 5, a partnership between Families CAN, First 5 Contra Costa, Contra Costa Child Care Council, Kaiser Permanente and Contra Costa County Health Services. The group formed in 2007 to combat childhood obesity.
Members of the Building Blocks for Kids Richmond Collaborative, Richmond Main Street Initiative and Youth Enrichment Strategies provided comments touting cool features at the mapped parks.
The map was created in partnership with First 5 Contra Costa, KaBOOM! and West County Regional Group.
