Deadline approaching for Chevron Richmond Black History Scholarship applications

About 600 people expected to attend free Getting Ready for College Conference in Richmond Saturday

The deadline for West Contra Costa Unified School District high school seniors to apply for the Chevron Richmond Black History Scholarship (BHAC) program is fast approaching – all application packets must be received by Dec. 19.

Four scholarships will be awarded in honor of William F. King, a distinguished Chevron employee of 27-plus years who retired in 2003.  King was a senior chemist, mentor, community activist and educator who shared his wealth of knowledge and wisdom with everyone he met.

To be eligible, applicants must attend the following West County or West Contra Costa Unified School District high schools: DeAnza, El Cerrito, Gompers, Hercules, Kennedy, Leadership Public, Middle College, North Campus, Pinole Valley, Richmond, Salesian, and Vista.

Applicants must also have an overall GPA of at least 2.5, must show community involvement and leadership skills, and must plan to attend a two or four year college or university in next academic school year.

Along with completing an application, students must submit a typed 500-750 word double-spaced essay about how an event in black history impacted their life, their experience in community involvement or lessons they’ve learned from their past. The applicants are also required to have a letter of recommendation from an instructor, adviser, coach, community leader, pastor or someone else who is not a relative.

Applicants will be notified the week of Feb. 2, and the first-place winner will be expected to read his or her essay at the 10th Annual Chevron Richmond Black History Celebration on Feb. 18.
