Volunteers are being sought to help beautify a downtown Richmond park that offers a dose of nature to those who live and work in the urban setting.

On Saturday April 26, the Richmond Main Street Initiative will hold a spring clean-up event at Community Green Space Park at Harbour Way and Macdonald Avenue. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and a picnic lunch will be provided.

Organizers call the park a “true gem where locals relax or participate in summer health and wellness activities.”

The park needs love and attention after winter, organizers said.

Volunteers will work for their lunch by pulling weeds, cleaning activity tables, picking up litter, clearing leaves and debris and planting flowers.

Those wishing to volunteer are encouraged to contact Alicia Gall at (510) 236-4049 or

Across the street from the park, the walls around an abandoned building are also receiving attention. Local artist Richard Muro Salazar has been commissioned by the city to paint a massive mural. A dedication ceremony for the mural is scheduled to take place May 8, according to an article in Richmond Pulse.
