Richmond police seize two guns after stolen vehicle pursuit

With help from a police canine, Richmond cops seized two guns and arrested the driver of a stolen vehicle who led them on a lengthy chase Tuesday night, police said.

The incident unfolded about 8:30 p.m. when officers stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of Nevin Avenue that had been stolen in Oakland, police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

The driver and a passenger took off in the vehicle, Abetkov said. The chase led police to Opal Street in North Richmond, where the suspects fled the car.

An extensive search ensued with help from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Abetkov said. The driver was located a few blocks away in the 100 block of Spears Street. The passenger hasn’t been located.

The suspect was “taken into custody with canine contact,” Abetkov said. It wasn’t immediately known if he sustained any injuries.

The identity of the suspect hasn’t been released. Abetkov said he is known to Richmond gang detectives.

Abetkov said a gun was located in the stolen vehicle, while another was found in the area where the suspects fled.

The driver was booked for evading, intent to commit a shooting and other gang-related crimes, Abetkov said.

No further details were provided.
