The mural at Rancho Market & Deli at 500 Market Ave. is coming along.
The community banded together to clean up and beautify the exterior of the central North Richmond market, which is one of the area’s only non-alcohol selling grocer. The store is also located near Verde Elementary school an is frequented by local families.
The project was launched last year by the Richmond Love Your Block Initiative, Supervisor John Gioia’s Office and the store’s owner Lucky Braimah. It has been a true community effort, with donations from the city and several local businesses including Kelly-Moore Paints in San Pablo and Home Depot in El Cerrito. Along with a lot of volunteer hours to do the work, the project enjoyed a community-led mural design process that benefited from a city arts grant. Read more about the effort here.
The mural will honor North Richmond’s rich history and promising future, with images including blues music, Black Panthers, fertile agricultural lands and black and brown solidarity, among others, according to organizers.
