Loved ones of a murdered father gathered for a vigil Tuesday at the site of where he was killed in the Crescent Park area of Richmond, and another vigil is planned at the same spot for tonight.

Mark Henderson II, 29, was fatally shot in the 4900 block of Hartnett Avenue about 9 p.m. on Monday following a weekend of violence that saw multiple shootings and the city’s first two homicides in nearly five months. An arrest in the case hasn’t been announced as family and friends cry out for justice for Henderson, who was murdered near his mother’s home.

Among the outpouring of stunned, saddened comments on social media, Henderson was described as a devoted father, family member with an uplifting spirit, always smiling. He attended El Cerrito High, Contra Costa College and was an active Mixed Martial Arts fighter.

Numerous messages on Facebook recounted stories of times when Henderson went out of his way to support family and friends, with one woman mentioning how he opened his home for her family when she was almost homeless.

“He was a UFC fighter, a Great Daddy, brother, son, friend, tutor, mentor and etc. With a Sociology degree,” one loved one posted on Facebook.

LaShonda Pierce, who published video footage from Tuesday’s vigil, told the Standard he was supportive to anyone he met.

“He knew people from all over and was loved by all,” Pierce said. “He definitely left a impression on everyone he met. He was dedicated to a positive and healthy lifestyle, didn’t drink or do any drugs, always connected with any kids he met.”

  1. Yet another all too common tragedy in Richmond. Senseless. I have more to say but I have to go now and pay my taxes so all those unemployed violent gang members in town can have a nice subsidized place to live for free and relax after a long day of ruining people’s lives and making Richmond a dangerous place to live…….
