A Richmond church is seeking donations after officials discovered cracks in the three ceiling beams that support the structure.

St Luke’s United Methodist Church at 3200 Barrett Ave. has been a place of worship for decades, having been built in 1942. For the past four months, its pastor, Rev. Ofa Uepi, said she noticed “fresh breaks on the beams.”

“Three beams that support the whole structure are cracking,” the reverend said. “We have reached out to structural engineer who came to observe the cracks. He told us the cracks is due to dry weather.”

The repairs are estimated to cost $80,000. The church’s membership hopes to raise the money soon.

“We have been told it is very risky for all of our congregants to worship in the church, in the sanctuary,” Rev. Uepi said. “We have moved to worship in the hall, but people want to come back to the house of the Lord and worship in the sanctuary.”

Those wanting to make donations to help the church fix the beams are encouraged to contact Rev. Uepi at (510) 200-1222. Also, donations can be mailed to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3200 Barrett Ave., Richmond, CA, 94804.
