Going the Extra Mile for job seekers

This career fair went the “extra mile” for local job seekers.

More than 30 significant employers and hundreds of prospective employees gathered on the Contra Costa College campus on Wednesday for the West Contra Costa Career Fair.

Companies presenting at the fair included event sponsor Chevron Richmond, Chevron’s significantly expanding ExtraMile convenience store brand, as well as Amazon, Tesla, Kaiser Permanente and Comcast.

Representatives of the Chevron Richmond Refinery talked to prospective workers about opportunities in its popular Regional Occupational Program training program, openings as Operator Trainees and open positions on the ongoing $1 billion Richmond Refinery Modernization Project.

In the next booth over, recruiters for ExtraMile explained their strong need for workers resulting from an expansion that aims to double the number of store sites throughout the western U.S. within seven years.

“We’re looking at customer service reps, station management personal, people with strong retail and retail management backgrounds to join our team,” said Don Tovar, training and workforce management lead at Chevron.

Tovar added, “We think there will be wonderful opportunities, not only for store personnel and store management positions as a result of that expansion plan, but also to build leaders of the future for Chevron Corp. as a whole.”

The fair also featured recruiters from public agencies such as AC Transit, Caltrans, the West Contra Costa Unified School District and local police and sheriff’s departments. Aside from employers, the fair also included resources for job seekers, including organizations that help lift barriers to employment.
