22-year-old San Pablo man killed in Richmond crash

A 22-year-old San Pablo man was killed after the truck he was driving hydro-planed on a rain-soaked roadway in Richmond and struck a light pole, police said.

The solo-vehicle crash occurred about 11:45 a.m. on 22nd Street headed southbound at Bissell Avenue, right before the underpass, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.

The driver, identified as Jesus Perez, was going too fast in the conditions when he lost control of his vehicle, according to police. He died from the impact of the crash. His only passenger, a friend, survived without injury.

Police are urging drivers to slow down, particularly in this wet weather.

“The ground is super wet and it’s been raining all day,” Tan said, saying painted roadway at the scene of the fatal crash caused an extra slick surface.

Tan advised drivers to make sure their wipers are in working condition, and to replace bald tires.

“Slow down,” he urged. “Nothing is that important.”
