Happy Lot Farm & Garden is inviting the community to help out with gardening and neighborhood clean-up activities prior to the garden’s 5-year-old birthday party on Monday, Jan. 15.

The party, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will celebrate the fifth year of positive transition for the lot at 45 1st St. (at Chanslor Ave.), which was once abandoned and is now an urban community garden.

The celebration will include lunch, cake, a car show, prizes and music. For more information, see the flyer below, call (510) 232-2644 or email happylotfarm@gmail.com.

The Happy Lot Farm & Garden is the brainchild of local resident Andromeda Brooks, who told the Richmond Confidential in 2012 that she wanted to transform a blighted spot she could see from her home’s windows. Brooks first organized a block cleanup, and then eventually decided to launch an urban farm in an area lacking adequate access to healthy food retailers.
