County offering costumed officiants for Halloween weddings

For love birds who are in the Halloween spirit, Contra Costa County plans to have several costumed characters available to officiate weddings on Tuesday, Oct 31.

The Clerk-Recorder Division at 555 Escobar St. in Martinez is offering county couples the unique experience to have their Halloween wedding officiated by a costumed staff member. In past years, a witch, zombie, pirate, the Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood and Rosie the Riveter officiated weddings. This year’s list of characters won’t be available until Tuesday.

The tradition began several years ago, when a couple who saw a Clerk Recorder staff member in costume requested to have that staff member officiate their wedding. Since 2013, it has been the office norm to offer couples the option of costumed officiants on Halloween.

In addition, one of the Clerk-Recorder ceremony rooms will feature holiday-themed decor.

“Upon arrival, the couple is handed a list of characters who can perform the ceremony,” the county says.

Couples are also given the option of a traditional ceremony.

“Obviously those looking to get married on Halloween are looking for a memorable experience,” Clerk-Recorder Joe Canciamilla said. ” It is fun for everyone.”

Ceremonies start at 8:30 a.m. and are held until 3:30 p.m. To make a wedding appointment or for more information, visit www.contracostacore.us.
