Upcoming Richmond job fair aims to 'break barriers to employment'

Local job seekers are encouraged to attend a “Breaking Barriers to Employment” job fair and summit in Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The career event is set to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Independent Community Church, 605 S. 16th St. Breakfast and lunch will be served and laptops and VISA gift cards will be raffled off at the event sponsored by Soulful Softball Sunday in partnership with Leaders Up.

Employment opportunities at the event will come from Noah’s Bagels, Red Bay Coffee, United Airlines, Sweet Green, Chipotle, AT&T, LYFT, Macy’s, Homeroom and many more, according to community advocate Rodney Alamo Brown, co-founder of Soulful Softball Sunday.

Job seekers will have opportunities to build interview skills with employers and to connect with community resources offering career guidance, development and training.

All told, the career fair will offer a Resume Hub, a LinkedIn Lounge, the aforementioned Mock Interview Circuit, a Grand Slam Readiness Assessment, a career expo with professional networking opportunities, interactive skill-building workshops for young adults, and a presentation on the Keys to Winning in Life and in the Workplace, Brown said.

“The summit’s focus is on overcoming the barriers to employment that disproportionately impact young men of color,” Brown said. “It is open to all young adults throughout the local region.”
