UPDATE THURSDAY, SEPT. 28, 12:30 p.m. — At Thursday around 7:30 a.m., the Smart car believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run accident that injured a 3-year-old boy in Richmond on Wednesday was spotted in El Cerrito by local police.

El Cerrito police summoned Richmond officers to the scene, and it was determined that the car was indeed the vehicle involved in the hit and run, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said. The car has been impounded and the driver has been taken into Richmond Police Department headquarters for questioning, but it has not been determined that he was the driver at the time of the crash, Tan said.

The 3-year-old boy was struck about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 2700 block of Macdonald Avenue, near 27th Street. He is in critical but stable condition, Tan said.

The boy was with his mother as he was about to get into their car parked on the curb. The child, however, escaped the mother’s grasp, darted out into the street and was struck by a car.
