The Contra Costa College Foundation announced Monday that it received a gift of $825,000 from the estate of the late business professor Stephen C. Schaefer to support CCC students interested in business careers.

The donation will also fund the Stephen C. Schaefer Scholarship for CCC business students intending to transfer to a University of California or California State University campus in order to complete a bachelor degree.

Schaefer “changed the lives of many students,” retiring in 2004 after a long career leading the Business and Real Estate Department at CCC, according to the foundation, where he was also active.

His estate will also support transfer students across the Contra Costa Community College District’s three colleges via a separate gift to scholarship provider, Kennedy-King Memorial Scholarship Fund, Ltd.

“My uncle was always so proud and passionate about Contra Costa College and the students he taught,” his niece Christina Schaefer said. “As teenagers and even as young adults, my brother and I always had CCC gear and on many of our trips to visit him, Uncle Steve included a CCC event as part of our visit.”
