The Richmond Rotarians never cease to amaze us, as they continued their long-running annual tradition on Wednesday of “surprising” local teachers with checks for $100 apiece.

Richmond Rotary President Connie Tritt and senior member Erle Brown kindly interrupted the Peres Elementary staff meeting in order to present each teacher with a check.

Naturally, school officials were grateful.

“Today’s staff meeting ended with a great surprise from Rotary Club of Richmond… a check for each teacher to start the year off,” they posted on Facebook.

The Richmond Rotary has been supporting Peres Elementary, a school serving low-income families, for years. In fact, Brown’s late wife, Phyllis Peres Brown, is the granddaughter of the man who donated the land to house Peres Elementary, according to Rotarian David A. Brown.

A couple of months ago, Phyllis passed away and left Rotary a gift of $10,000 to be used to enhance teaching and learning at Peres, Brown said.

Separately, Dr. Dan Tanita, a Rotarian, opened the school’s free dental clinic.
