Pinole police temporarily shut down streets in their city’s downtown Tuesday night following a report of an explosive device in the area.

About 6:45 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Tennent Avenue and San Pablo Avenue and found that a male subject had an explosive device in the front seat of his vehicle. The person reportedly had located a 60mm mortar round while doing some work in Tiburon, and decided to put it in his car.  While en-route to his home in Pittsburg, he sent a picture of the device to a family member, who in turn sent the picture to a law enforcement official.

“The law enforcement official told the subject to immediately stop his vehicle and contact the local police department,” police said.

He stopped in Pinole, where police responded and located the device in the front seat of his vehicle. Out of precaution, Pinole and Hercules police officers teamed to close off all streets within a 300 foot radius and evacuated or sheltered in place all businesses and residences in the 300 foot area of Tennent Ave. and San Pablo Ave.

Travis Air Force base sent a team from its explosive ordinance disposal unit to investigate the device. The device was rendered safe.

The roads were reopened after several hours.
