Luis Garcia wins Square Warriors jr. welterweight title

Richmond native Luis Garcia poses with family after winning the Square Vision junior welterweight title belt.

After eight hard-fought rounds on Saturday, Luis “Vicious” Garcia’s redemption was complete — and now he’s the Square Warriors junior welterweight champion.

At the Alameda County Fairgrounds, Garcia (8-1-1) avenged his only professional boxing loss to Eddie Diaz in January. After that loss, the Richmond native trained hard, made adjustments, and fought his way to another opportunity to face Diaz, this time for a belt.

Garcia almost ended Saturday’s fight early with an overhand right in the first round that “nearly relieved Diaz of his senses,” according to fight organizers. Diaz kept in the fight, but Garcia won by majority decision after eight rounds.

“I was 100-percent prepared for the long distance and planned to go the distance,” Garcia told us.
