Richmond to host chess festival in honor of National Chess Day

More than 5,000 people are expected to dance for a cause at the Zydeco “Stomp Down” Festival at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Zydeco is brand of African American dance music originally from southern Louisiana, typically featuring accordion and guitar. The style will be celebrated through live performances, dancing, raffles, food and more at a concert fundraiser at Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza, from 6 p.m. through midnight.

Performers include Step Rideau & The Outlaws, Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble, “Black Cat” Carrier & The Zydeco Ro Doggs and more.

The event is being held by the Anaiyas Styles Foundation, an organization that aims to help families emerge from economic crisis. Fundraisers help fund field trips for teens to college fairs, museums and other enrichment opportunities.

“This is a chance to give back to the community and give at-risk youth life-changing opportunities,” organizer John Collins said.

Those interested in helping to sponsor the event are asked to contact anaiyastylefoundation@gmail.com or (844)466-4066.
