Vallejo police fatally shot a suspect in Richmond this evening following a high-speed chase that began in Vallejo and ended in the Hilltop neighborhood, Richmond police said.

About 5:20 p.m., officers in Vallejo attempted to stop the armed robbery suspect — identified as 45-year-old Jeffrey Barboa of Benicia — that occurred in El Cerrito. Barboa then led them on a high-speed pursuit that ended in the 3400 block of Richmond Parkway, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said. There, he exited the car and advanced on officers with a machete raised overhead, police said. Five officers opened fire following numerous orders to drop the weapon.

No one else was injured and there were no other suspects, Tan said.

The incident closed Richmond Parkway between Lakeside Drive and Interstate Highway 80. The closure was estimated to last until at least 9 p.m.

The shooting is being investigated by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office.
