Dawaun Rice, 20, was indicted earlier this month by the Contra Costa Grand Jury for the murders of Chrisean Nealy and Javonte Prothro in Richmond in September 2016, according to police.

Nealy, 17, was found with fatal gunshot wounds in one of the carports at the Bella Vista Apartments, 3400 Richmond Parkway, about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 16.

Three days later, Prothro, 29, suffered fatal gunshot wounds at 1025 S. 47th St.

Within days, Rice was identified as the suspect in Prothro’s murder and arrested. Evidence collected from both homicide scenes connected him to both murders, police said.

“We hope this brings closure to the Prothro and Nealy families, and that justice will be served. Please keep both families in your thoughts,” Richmond police spokesperson Felix Tan said.
