Richmond police dog finds alleged gang member hiding in garbage can

A 15-year-old was allegedly seen tossing a gun while fleeing police, and a second suspect reportedly failed in his attempt to hide in a garbage can, following an attempted traffic stop in Richmond last month, police reported Monday.

The incident unfolded about 8:30 p.m. April 21 in the area of 23rd Street and Barrett Avenue, where patrolling RPD gang unit detectives conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle committing vehicle code violations, Richmond police spokesman Lt. Felix Tan said.

After pulling the car over and walking up to speak with the driver, the driver sped off, police said. The detectives ran back to their patrol car, and during the ensuing pursuit they saw a 15 year old occupant throw a gun out of the window, Tan said.

Eventually, the suspect vehicle stopped and two of the three occupants fled, including the 15-year-old. The juvenile was caught after a foot chase, and a police dog sniffed around to find the second suspect inside a garbage can, Tan said.

An ensuing search “yielded a high-capacity 10 mm Glock magazine and a loaded 9 mm Glock pistol with an extended magazine within the backyard of a residence,” Tan said, adding, “All the occupants were validated gang members.”
