Richmond building evacuated after worker gets threatening letter

Richmond Fire Department offers tips for approaching fire season

A building evacuation occurred Monday afternoon but no one ended up injured or sickened when an employee of a business in the 500 block of Canal Boulevard received a threatening letter with a white powdery substance inside.

The incident was reported to police about 12:40 p.m., leading to an evacuation of the building, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.

A test of the substance showed up negative for toxic or hazardous materials, and a subsequent test confirmed it was protein, Tan said. A third, more comprehensive test is pending. Workers were cleared to enter the building about two hours later, Tan said.

The FBI has been notified about the incident, the police lieutenant added. As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in the case.
