A program providing seniors free assistance with common household repairs is expanding into West County.
The El Sobrante Rotary Club has partnered with Episcopal Senior Communities (ESC) to offer the Home Team program, which sends Rotary club volunteers to assist seniors who need help with minor issues and struggle to afford hiring a handyman or contractor, according to Annette Balter, ESC director of senior resources for Contra Costa County.
The volunteers can replace lightbulbs in hard to reach areas, switch out batteries in smoke alarms and fix leaking faucets or running toilets, squeaky doors and windows and damaged or torn screens.
The program was developed in 2009 by the Rotary Club of Lamorinda Sunrise, Lafayette. The Home Team identifies older adults in the community and then coordinates volunteer members of local Rotary clubs to visit and make “small, necessary repairs at no cost.”
But the services don’t end there. ESC provides intake, assessment and follow-up for the clients.
“This program is about keeping people safely and independently in their own homes – where they want to continue to live – and we are thrilled to be able to add El Sobrante to Home Team,” Balter said in a statement. “I would love to expand the reach of the program further into west County.”
Home Team events occur every other month, usually on a Saturday morning. The next event is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. For an appointment, call (888) 204-5573.
