High-speed chase on I-80 in Contra Costa County leads to arrest Tuesday

23rd Street fight turns fatal

A driver told us Tuesday afternoon she “just barely missed being hit” by a Mercedes fleeing police on Interstate Highway 80 near the McBryde Avenue exit.

She was apparently referring to a pursuit that began in Vallejo about 3:15 p.m. and led to a three-car collision in Richmond.

Vallejo police attempted to pull over a green 1989 Mercedes-Benz with a license plate that did not match the vehicle, according to Lt. Herman Robinson. The driver, identified as Phillip Chambers of Vallejo, fled police, driving over the Carquinez Bridge and on westbound Highway 80 at speeds of up to 120 mph, Robinson said.

The pursuit ended in a hit-and-run collision with multiple cars just east of San Pablo Avenue, according to NBC Bay Area, which caught the incident on video. The drivers of those other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Chambers was arrested on suspicion of felony evading police. Police are investigating whether the Mercedes was stolen.

  1. I drove past the crash scene.. this was ANOTHER terrible commute day on the 80! I had a Dr’s appointment in Berkeley that had to be rescheduled due to 4 lanes closed westbound 80 in Emeryville that backed up traffic so bad! From Richmond to Berkeley, Waze estimated 60+mins!?! Halfway there I had to turn around and go back, only to be stuck in crawling traffic due to this Mercedes incident (that was on the opposite side even!) SMH~ and people try to say LA traffic is bad? HA! Yeah, right!!!
