Hilltop Mall store on JCPenney closure list

Hilltop Mall’s JCPenney made the list of 138 stores across the nation that the company will close this year.

According to a company statement: “As part of a continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long-term profitability, J. C. Penney Company, Inc. will be closing 138 stores, one supply chain facility in Lakeland, Fla., and relocating one supply chain facility in Buena Park, Calif., to align the Company’s physical store footprint and omnichannel network.”

The liquidation process for most affected stores will begin April 17. Most store closures will occur in June. About 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted.

In a Feb. 24 statement, Marvin R. Ellison, the company’s chairman and CEO, said the store closures “will also allow us to adjust our business to effectively compete against the growing threat of online retailers.”

Other large retailers such as Macy’s have similarly announced nationwide store closures. The Macy’s at Hilltop Mall is set to remain, Mayor Tom Butt stated in his State of the City address in late February.

Meanwhile, the Hilltop Mall property remains for sale.

“Developers remain interested in purchasing the mall, but progress has been slow,” Butt said in the State of the City speech.

The property remains a “high-priority site for development,” the mayor added.

  1. I remember Hilltop from my child hood. The skating rink, capwells to the movie theatre and the two toy stores. The mall was truly and great place.

Unfortunately as time goes on it has fallen like so many other malls. The mall is so empty on Penney’s leaves Macy’s and sears are bound to follow.
