The Salesian girls and boys varsity basketball teams won their respective North Coast Section Division III titles on Saturday.
The No. 2-seeded Salesian girls team upset No. 1-seeded Bishop O’Dowd 46-42 in the championship game at St. Mary’s College in Moraga. The Pride fell behind 13-12 in the first quarter, but then went on an 18-8 run in the second and held the Dragons off the rest of the way.
Makayla Edwards, a sophomore, led Salesian with 14 points, while fellow sophomore Nia Chinn contributed 9 points, according to stats posted on MaxPreps.com. Taimane Lesa-Hardee added 8 points, Taisia Fleming had six and Sydney Stewart four.
Earlier in the tournament, the Pride defeated Hercules 81-22, Eureka 54-27 and Campolindo 67-48.
Salesian next has an away game at St. Mary’s of Stockton this Friday, 7 p.m., in the 2017 CIF State Girls Basketball Championships – Open Division.
The No. 1 seeded Pride boys team held off Campolindo 55-40 in the championship game at St. Marys College, with James Akinjo scoring a game-high 17 points, according to Prep2Prep.com.
Jamario Bibb added 13 points and JoVon McClanahan contributed eight for Salesian, which coasted through the NCS tournament by defeating San Marin 72-30 and Kennedy High 91-38.
The boys team next has an away game at De La Salle on Friday, March 10, 7 p.m., in the 2017 CIF State Boys Basketball Championships – Open Division.
