The Salesian boys and girls teams, along with the Kennedy High boys team, won their respective Tri-County Athletic League titles on Saturday.
The No. 1-seeded Salesian girls team (20-8 overall, 8-0 league) topped rival St. Mary’s 55-44 in the championship game of the TCAL Rock Division. The game was close for three quarters until the Pride went on a 20-7 fourth quarter tear to seal the win, according to stats provided to Maxpreps.com. Angel Jackson led her team with 13 points, Nina Chinn had 11 and Anjel Galbraith chipped in 9. To reach the title game, the Pride defeated Hercules 77-49.
The No. 1-seeded Salesian boys team (24-4 overall, 7-1 league) won in overtime, 66-63, over St. Patrick-St. Vincent to earn their TCAL Rock Division title. The Pride fought through multiple double-digit deficits to pull off the victory. James Akinjo, who finished with 10 points, hit the bucket in OT to give the Pride the lead, and then Ke’mare Wright sank a free-throw to seal the deal. Previously on Thursday, the Pride beat Albany 64-44.
In the Stone Division, No. 4 Kennedy High’s two straight upset wins culminated in a championship. The Eagles took down No. 1-seeded Hercules 55-53 on Thursday and then defeated No. 2-seeded John Swett 49-46 to win the title.
The Eagles next face Albany in the first round of the North Coast Section Division III playoffs. The game will take place at Kennedy High at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Pride girls team next hosts Hercules on Tuesday, 7 p.m. in the first round of the NCS Division III playoffs.
