Richmond student-athletes celebrated after accepting college scholarships

These student-athletes have been the talk of the town this week.

All four of the young men from Richmond have accepted college football scholarships, and on Wednesday night more than 100 people attended their signing party at Mountain Mike’s Pizza in Pinole, according to community advocate Rodney “Alamo” Brown, whose Facebook post about the accomplishment has drawn a lot of attention in the community.

As pictured from left to right, Rico Tolfree of De Anza High is headed to San Jose State in the fall; Loren Calhoun of De Anza is headed to New Mexico Highlands; Damon Cole of El Cerrito High is attending Boise State; and Devon King of De Anza is going to U.C. Davis.

“Congrats to all these guys who NOT only put in work on the field but more importantly in the classroom as well,” Brown said in his Facebook post.

As of this writing, Brown’s post about the athletes’ accomplishments had garnered nearly 1,500 likes, more than 380 shares and over 200 congratulatory comments from the community.

As one commentor stated aptly: “Congratulations boys, you have shown what it looks like when you put your mind to something…Best of luck to you all.”
