Police: Father arrested after texting photo of himself holding knife to daughter’s throat

23rd Street fight turns fatal

The photo left at least one Richmond police officer speechless.

A 28-year-old Oakland man was arrested after he allegedly texted a photograph to his estranged girlfriend that shows him holding a steak knife to their 5-year-old daughter’s throat. The girl was not injured, police said.

On Sunday afternoon, the girl’s mom walked into Richmond Police Department headquarters reporting that Larry Gilbert sent the threatening text message during his visitation time with their daughter.

“The suspect sent a photograph of him holding a steak knife to his own 5 yr. old daughter’s throat and threatening her life,” police Lt. Felix Tan said. “The suspect and mother were in a disagreement and he took it out on their child.”

Richmond police detectives responded swiftly, pinging the suspect’s cellphone to locate him. They then swarmed a hotel in Oakland and arrested him as he was walking out, Tan said.

His daughter was found inside her hotel room by herself, physically unharmed.

“The suspect was arrested and charged with numerous crimes with a bail of over $1 million,” Tan said.
