Playing chess is like gymnastics for the brain — and it also makes for a great family activity.

The West Coast Chess Alliance is hosting a number of free “Family Chess Nights” beginning Friday and running through December at the Richmond Recreation Complex, 3230 Macdonald Ave.

The whole community is invited to come hone your skills or receive free instruction on how to play.

All chess nights will take place on Fridays — Oct. 7, 14 and 21; Nov. 4, 11, 18; and December 2 and 9. See the flier for more info:
